Family Portraits: A Natural Alternative to the Studio

Sometimes, studio family portraits just aren’t what you’re after.  Especially where young children or newborn babies are concerned. Taking photographs of them in familiar surroundings, with mum and dad there, is often the best way to go. That’s exactly what we did here.  Serena got in touch to book a family portrait session, but rather than the studio style, she wanted something that allowed the children to be comfortable and to have fun at home.  I really wanted to capture the family dynamic in a natural and relaxed way. I wanted to show how they really are and present a set of photographs that didn’t look too posed. Photographs that looked more like a natural slice of family life.

If you have children, you’ll know that when they are comfortable, their personalities really shine through.  What a pair of personalities we had here.  The plan was originally to photograph them all at home and then go for a little walk and get some outdoor family shots too.  The weather was not on our side though, so I went back the following week to get them all outside in the sunshine.  I loved both halves of this shoot.  Meeting them all was a lot of fun and I certainly got a lesson in pulling funny faces from their little boy.

If you’re interested in booking a family portrait shoot, or even if you don’t have children and just want some portraits of yourself or the two of you, in more natural surroundings, head over to the Lifestyle Portrait page to find out more. It’s worth remembering that families don’t always involve human children.  If you want some portraits with your furry family, that’s fine too.
